6mm BR

Recommended Posts

Hi all, fancy a custom/semi custom rifle in the near future. I have done ALOT is swatting up on calibres, and I fancy a 6mm br. Does any of the PW massive shoot one ? I know there stupid accurate, easy to reload etc.... But what's barrel life, recoil like ? Any pros and cons are very welcome :)

I made myself a 6br out of "off the shelf" bits and I'm very pleased with it. As you say, it's a stunning accurate round, very light recoil, easy to load for, plenty of components about and a wide variety of available bullets. It's also a very efficient cartridge, a 30 grain 6br powder load gives a comparable performance to a 40 grain .243 load shooting the same bullet.

Barrel life doesn't seem to be much of a problem, unlike some of the hot rounds.

The only downside I can see is that the cartridge isn't the best shape to feed from a magazine, there's plenty of mag fed 6br's about but it's not the round I would choose for rapid bolt work.

I depends what you want to do with it concerning bullet weight and twist rate, my barrel is a 1 in 8 and will happily stabilise the 108gn Berger bullets.

My rifle started as single shot Savage F12 target action, bought from North West customs guns. I ordered a Shilen select match barrel direct from the USA as a personal import. I bought a Rifle Basix Sav-2 trigger unit direct from RB in the US and also 20moa Ken Farrell scope rail, again direct. I fitted it into a Richards microfit semi finished stock.

Of course, being a Savage, there was no "Smithing" charges as the barrel screws on and is "headspaced" by use of a locking nut and spanner.

By the time I'd given the bolt a few tweaks and a proper bedding job I had an accurate rifle. And, for me, a very satisfying experience,

I did look at the 6mm PPC as well, but got put off by the faff with brass, also it's extremely hard to make deer legal. The BR on the other hand is much Easier to make deer legal, and a good few uk shooters use it for such. Mag feed is a bigger issue, though can be done by the many good smiths we have in the uk. With some fiddleing, from research I think I'm going for a 1/8 twist barrel, as I can use 58-100+ grain bullets. Wondering if there's any BR users down here in kent, so I can pick some brains ?

I run a 6PPC, single shot. Knowing what I know now about the BR case ( I have a 20BR) then I would now have preferred to use the BR case, however to get optimum accuracy you should turn the necks, this is pretty easy.

Every deer I have shot at has dropped on the spot but you do have to stoke it up to get it over 1700 ft lbs.

A full custom is usually a single shot rifle, all my rifles are such and non ejectors as I dont want to loose brass, I feel in no way disadvantaged and have in the past killed 3 foxes in under 60 seconds with the 6PPC.

That's exactly what I'm thinking of Jamie g, all the research Iv done on multi shot 6br's has led me to the 595 or 590 action in 22-250. in terms of semi custom builds anyway. I don't really fancy a single shot rifle, so I will probably go down this route, if I don't go full custom. There are also a fair few after market stock for the 590 action. The wallets getting worried :)

don't forget the Sako vixen, I think it was even sold in 6mm or .22 PPC if I remember correctly?. its a very fine action with a drop plate mag that double stacks. tikka 595 mags are plastic in all the later ones, difficult to modify and very expensive to replace. I wonder if controlled round feed such as on a Cz, mauser or older Winchester might work well though unpopular with most of todays gunsmiths. Personally if I was buying one I should go single shot and save the stress of feeding nothing in the chamber when placed under pressure

the sako 75 action will feed the 6 br also but you would need a 6mm ppc mag. well the tikka mags are plastic there not to hard to mod. you can put a block in the back of them if you need to make them shorter. but as long as you get the 22/250 mag it will feed with out work.

as for the sako 6ppc well the mag would work if you changed it to 6br. you would have the wrong bolt as the ppc bolt face is different to the one the 6br uses.

i dont know if it could be opened up by a gunsmith.

and imo would be easier just to find a shot out 22/250 tikka m595

as for single shot br. i guess you would get use to it. more rifles are about if you just wanted to buy one straight off. i know where two rpa 6 br rifles are for sale
