Trap it then Despatch or deliver to nearest RSPCA centre for rehoming...... The RSPCA may even come a s remove it for you. Subsonic load in moderated shotgun will do the job

Unmoderated gun with subsonic ammo is quieter

If I were you I'd trap it and shoot it with the shotgun. I would ring the police and say that I'm just letting you know out of courtesy that I am about to despatch a fox in my back garden with a shotgun and if you receive any calls it was me. Perfectly legal and you should only need one shot.

As for transporting a live fox in a trap the RSPCA and animal hospitals do it all the time. Treat it humanely and there will be no issue.

The problem with calling the RSPCA ...

they will then 're-home' the foxes. Usually for urban foxes caught on Merseyside/Chester, they bring them out to a large piece of Forestry Commision land up in the hills a mile or so from me, and let them go. Then, a week or 2 later, when the foxes are starving (because they're urbans, and far better at hunting dropped KFC food than rabbits and mice) they find the lambs, chickens, etc ... and bingo, I've got dead stock and a fox problem.

So not really the most responsible course of action.

My dad used to find where in the fence the fox was getting in and set up a humane snare. In the morning the fox would be just sat there and he could humanely despatch it with the 410. Got a fair few over the years that way when they came for the chickens.
