belly47
have been offered the above rifle and have some questions if anyone can help. what is the accuracy like?, as I know that bolt actions generally produce better results. I will be using it for rabbits at night and wondered what peoples views are on this as they will naturally be noisier as the next round cycles automatically. I know extra magazines are an issue, heard them described as rare as rocking horse poo. information on any other known issues or problem would be appreciated can the trigger be sorted as ive heard they are very heavy belly Edited May 16, 2014 by belly47
dkj7176
I got one about 3 weeks ago - I like it. accurate enough is a bit noisier than a bolt action but I lamp with it fine. The trigger is heavy with a fair bit of creep, general consensus is to just live with it - messing about can make it go fully auto but apparently some people have success taking about 25% of the cam taking away the creep - I assume lighter spring will take down the pull weight (I wouldnt go too light though). If you were to mess with the trigger be aware there are no parts available. It does need cleaning thoroughly every 100 rounds (mostly the trigger and mags) as it gets very gritty with unburnt powder its an pretty easy job as it takes down very quickly. As a general feel, its a bit old school which I like mine still has a long barrel on it (about 22inch with parker hale) - it was my 1st semi auto so not much comparison but I like it more than the stock 10/22 I've had a go with As said only 3 weeks into it so maybe still in honeymoon period but I do find myself taking it our more often than the HMR these days, I'd probably have another one. flynny
I've got one mate, made in 1974, it's the same age as I am, it loves winny subs, is accurate but noisy as all semi actions are, You can get mags for them, they are like rocking horse manure though, Mine has given me 10 years of pleasure and has accounted for thousands of rabbits and a few fox over the years, It's ugly as sin but keep it clean and it functions, they are an old gun nowadays though so as above have said parts are rare unless you can purchase a spare one and use it for spares etc? Personally unless it's dirt cheap I'd rather fill a slot with something more modern, not that they are carp far from it they are good guns.but it's not worth filling a slot with, but that's just my opinion How much is the gun mate? I paid 80 notes for mine back in 2004, Atb Flynny
belly47
I bought it yesterday so next question is what ammo are you putting through yours out of interest. I will obviously have to try a few brands to see what the gun is happy with but a little pointer in the right direction would be helpful. cheers belly
Imperfection
I've got one-its a fabby little rifle! Mine will shoot Wincheser and Ely subs all day and also HV rounds like Stingers,Minimags etc.
belly47
mine does not have SUBSONIC stamped on the barrel like some of them do. in fact the guy I bought it off said he had had some issues with subs and uses standard velocity through it, so I tried them both very briefly when I bought it and standards cycled better , has anyone else had issues using subs? if so did you just switch to a faster round or is there anything that can be done internally to the rifle to help it cycle subs
thepasty
I have the 511 which is the same rifle and love it. mine has subsonic on the barrel and shoots them fine. Mine is my go to night bunny basher, plenty quiet enough and great accuracy. I have mine zeroed at 50yrds and fine it perfect with a little LED type torch on the scope..... super light to carry and compact. Imperfection
Mine wont entertain CCI subs so i just stick with the two brands i mentioned previously. They're probably a bit too underpowered to cycle the action.
Imperfection
mine has subsonic on the barrel and shoots them fine. Mine is a 511 too and also has subsonic stamped on the barrel. Im guessing here, but i think this is the fundamental difference between the 511 and 581 because they are exactly the same rifle. The 511 was designed to cope with subsonic ammo hence having it on the barrel while the 581 does not. belly47
as mine will likely not cycle the subs I will have to put up with the increased noise I guess. have either of you two put a bi pod on yours? I have a Deben bi pod I want to use but will need to put on QD studs do you see this causing any issues? im aware that the existing sling attachment on the fore end goes through to where the barrel has to engange so guess I will have to leave that, or could I juts fit a QD stud that still holds the bracket for the barrel in place? dkj7176
If it has not got subsonic on the barrel ( like mine) the guy just cut 2 coils from the main spring. Seems to cycle winchester subs ok, not perfect but ok I don't like bipods, I use Shooting sticks made from the garden poles like off you tube. Im a lefty, there's no cast, so suits me
Livefast123
I've got a CZ 511 and love it, can't see any reason to spend any more £££ on a gun. It field strips in seconds, is built like a tank and is accurate. Yes parts are hard to come by, but with their old eastern block engineering I doubt you'll ever need any. I've cur mine down to 14" making it ultra pointable. In the last 2 years I've put 5000 + rounds through mine without any issues apart from with some dodgy Geco ammo. I put 400 Blazer rounds through it last weekend and didn't even have to clean it.
thepasty
I've had a bi pod on mine using QD studs but I quickly took it off as I tend to shoot off hand or from sticks when lamping.
belly47
so did you have to drill a new hole on the fore end or just replace the existing sling fitting with a qd stud
thepasty
qd stud goes in sling fitting, bipod goes on, sling fitting goes on bipod, done.
thepasty
as for spares, thats easily sorted, as is the spare mag.... I got my gun guy to buy a dirt cheap (£50 I think) 511 at auction for spares and the extra mag, I stripped it at his place and took away all the bits I might need, he retained the barrel and receiver for scrap. I'm glad I did as the extractor claw broke a few weeks after.
belly47
hi guys can the 581 owners let me know their cleaning routine please as regards the magazines ( how to clean it) and cleaning of action etc many thanks
Imperfection
Never cleaned my magazines, but the rifle is simple. Using a 5p piece, loosen the screw on the side a few turns then while holding the barrel with one hand and butt with the other-push downwards in a scissor type way and they will seperate.Spray the action with lots of WD40 using the pressure to blast the muck out and then get an old tooth brush to work it into the mechanism.Spray more WD40 to into the workings then leave it barrel facing upwards for it to drain. When drained, wipe down and reassemble. I never clean the barrel. The only time i did,it lost its accuracy. *I get WD40 for nothing hence why i use it so liberally.
