rowland75
Im about to totally strip my mk3 meteor. This has know become something to learn from and hopefully will be fun to plink with if it ever goes back together. Ive sorted finishing the stock and blueing the metalwork, but as regards knocking out the pins that hold it together, I guess a selection of punches and a hide mallet. From anybody who has stripped and refurbed an air rifle all tips are greatfully received. Pete

arnold
Hello, well stripping spring air files is very dangerous unless you know what your doing, when time comes to remove main spring this can be dangerous, your best bet is to take to your local gunsmith on advice on how you can do this. Axe
Pete you shouldnt need any specific tools to dismantle the rifle. All the pins will simply push out. What you will need to do is build a jig to remove the main spring safely. You'll need to be able to hold the rifle firmly in place whilst depressing the main spring so that you can remove the main spring retaining pin and then finally removing the spring. So you'll also need to make a out of dowl or something suitable thats sized the same as the internal diameter of the piston/spring chamber but will go over the retaining pin, if you get my drift. Kind like cutting an 8mm slot accross the end of the dowl. Dont be tempted to simply employ another pair of hands, thats a recipe for disaster, been there and fortunately got away without trouble. But will buiild a jig next time.
Lord Geordie
I used to use an old Black and Decker workmate with G clamps and some SOFT wood like pine to help change the main springs. Made gouges semi circles into 2 parts of the pine to the shape of the action and when putting them together there would be a small gap between the 2 halves. When you clamp these together to the bench the soft wood grips the action but doesn't dent it. Then you need to make a block to take the spring pressure from the back of the action and turn the bench clamps till the block takes up ALL the play and carefully remove the pins. Then when you slowly retract the bench clamps this releases the pressure from the spring slowly till it is safe to remove the whole job from the bench OR you can replace the spring while it is still on the bench and reverse the removal process. The HARD ones are the likes of the Air Sporter where the trigger section SCREWS into the back Not so bad removing them but WHAT a pain to replace them LG
rowland75
Thanks for all the replys. I have a pretty competent tool kit so that shouldnt be a problem. I have removed the main spring before and replaced it with an ox spring but the gun was in need of a lot of other work and obviously still fired awfully. Im looking for a new air rifle (springer) at the moment so rebuilding the meteor is more for me to understand the workings, and cosmetic techniques rather than powering it up and causing myself and others injury. Many thanks Pete
Hunter
Carefull what you are doing tuning with 'OX' springs. This may leave your gun over 12ftlbs, and it will class it as a firearm. Getting caught like this, even if its a mistake carrys a minimum sentance of 6yrs Always chrono a rifle after any tuning to make sure you are safe. I have re-built the Meteor a couple of times, and I even have a spare trigger action and main spring (used but still plenty of life) should you need il post them
