Blunderbust
As a dog owner i wouldn't leave any dog alone in the room with a 2 year old and as a parent you should supervise all young children with animals. Correct, no matter how good a dog is I would never leave my young lad with it on there own.
Grandalf
I have had and been around dogs all of my life - and that's a long time. A dog is a dog - No matter how much you love them they are still a dog. They act like a dog, think like a dog and will react like a dog in all circumstances that their behaviour is not being modified by you. That means that when they are on their own they will react in a totally different way to how they react in your presence. I missed this thread the first time around - I hope the toddler can forget the incident and not be scared of dogs all her life - That would be very sad. The police must act in situations like this - The dog has clearly demonstrated how it reacts to children when it is away from its master. There are no if's left to answer. I once had a lab that attacked The Memsahib - The dog was a super working animal and had thrown one good litter - Action was needed and I, very sadly, had to take it. Had to leave dog in care of wife when I was away at work - Couldn't trust dog not to do the same again - Decision made.
spinach
Grandalf, Spot on. The big difference is we see a good working obedient dog and get to know when it's drifting and work on it and a pet dog owner who rarely trains the dog or doesn't do it consistently. Do the courts have the right to send someone to dog training, or is that even more nanny state. John.
malkiserow
I've just learned that the owner told another neighbour that she has been trying to train the dog at classes. That is a joke as it responds to nothing........ If a court stipulates training..... A repeat of what has happen in'training' would be a waste of time. The owner needs training first. al4x
No they don't the dog needs socialisation with children so it's no longer scared of them or reacts in this way. It's a collie it's not bitten it has nipped it's perfectly sort out able but shouldn't be allowed to get into the situation. Where I took mine to puppy classes they have growler classes for dogs that are aggressive to other ones. They get loads of socialisation in a controlled environment and most show huge improvements.
