Of perms....

A few weeks ago when leaving the local clayground, there was a large 4 x 4 parked across the diveway. I got out to see what was going on and there ...stood in the road was a farmhand with two roads to watch and a gate to aim the oncomming cows into..."would you liike a hand I ask" "yes he replies...theres not enough of me to go round, stand there and stop em going down that road"...So, being quite happy dealing with beast I did so..result 1 herd safely in field with minimum fuss.

along comes landowner, who was driving said moos down the farm lane to that field gate...so I thought...time to be cheeky....I say sir..says I, it always paying to be respectful..., I'm looking for some land to shoot over.. Hmmmm he says ...looks me up and down and says ...OK...come and see me tomorrow lunch time....you could have knocked me over with a feather...so next day I was there at lunch time with a preprinted BASC permission slip ready made out...result...all signed and done...

300 acres of grass and grazing, oozing with rabbits, a few 900mph pigeons and crows like longrange bombers...

but also...

any game and wildfowl that should happen on that land (in season of course)

He has just informed me that there is no need as far as HE is concerned for me to phone him...just turn up and thin out them rabbits....he has VERY kindly also just allowed me to take a young lad with me when I go...(do him good to learn from an older shooter says he....) so i now have a shooting buddy, albeit inexperienced at rough/walked up but a cracking lad on clays....

THEN...today...just to cap a great few weeks....one of his neighbours pulled up alongside me as i was getting ready to go shoot...and said..."ahhh...just the chap....I've been looking to catch up with you...you shoot XXXXXX's land dont you?" "yup" says I...." great, well whilst you are at it come and get those %$$%^"£^"%^ rabbits off my land too...in fact come to that you can take anything moving ...if its legal to do so..."

so thats another 30 acres...not a lot but a very welcome addition as it fills in a "dent" that was awkward in the field lines AND its got a super pond on it....

sometimes...its just about being in the right place at the right time, being willing to be part of the rural life, and being generally pleasant and respectful....The more landowners see YOU as "belonging" in the countryside...the better they will consider your "request"
