Dunkield that's a cracking idea, and if the noise pursues it's the rotor? And the pads are held in by a single retaining pin which goes

Through the caliper, pad 1 then the spring then pad 2 and out the other side. You have to physically bend the end of the clip once in place to keep it in that position

Had exactly the same problem with a set of deore brakes, tried disc cleaner and sanding the pads, and bleeding them was a complete bitch. Couldn't put up with the noise any longer so bought a pair of shimano brakes for about £70, job done
