If you get a fax shotgun does this authorise you to us solid slugs as we have a lot of fox traps and a 410 solid slug would be ideal or maybe a 410 pistol

No, slugs are treated like any other ammo on your FAC and need to be authorized for a particular purpose, much the same as any firearm or ammo would be.

Once you have applied for slugs and they have been granted, the caliber & quantity are listed and their use is conditioned.

You can use them in any shotgun you own, they are not restricted to use in a fac shotgun.

One thing to be aware of if shooting slug is your choke, the recommended chokes for smoothbore barrels are cylinder and improved cylinder, anything tighter and you risk the slug hitting the choke. A a lot of slugs are ribbed (finned or whatever you want to call it) to allow for this and they may seem to shoot OK but over time can damage/open up tighter chokes.

totally unneeded though, using standard carts in a 410, when dispatching foxes in cage traps, the end of muzzle can be held inches above the head, the lead shot does not have the time to expand as normal from leaving the barrel to hitting the target, and thus goes in as one solid mass of lead, I have shot endless foxes this way, all have a neat 1" hole TDC, no need for slug rounds
