Wiggum
Got a call from a friend during the week to say the farmer was harvesting a couple of fields of rape and were on for a shoot this weekend. We'd provisionally planned to shoot on Sunday as my friend was working Saturday but due to the storms coming in we decided to shoot this afternoon. I made my way over to the field parked just inside and started to unload the gear. I stood for two minutes trying to figure out where to set up and the pigeons were coming across the field from every direction it looked like a world war 2 dog fight ! Mind made up on hide location I carried all the gear over and was just about to start setting up and the phone rang, it was my mate and he'd just had a phone call from the farmer saying the game keeper was shooting those fields today !!! Just as he said it a shot rang out in the adjacent field and pigeons lifted from all six surrounding fields, there must have been 400-500 in the air. Now comes the frustrating part as were not allowed to shoot when the game keepers out which isn't normally a problem as he only shoots pigeon during harvest whilst we slog it out all through the winter but just in the time it took me to walk the 100 yards back to the car he must of had 20 shots I reckon it could easily of been a 100+ bird day we've missed out on. I guess you win some and lose some but got it's frustrating !
stuy
It can be frustrating , but its one of the perks of his job ,and he may be giving a few beaters a day out , offer some beating or help to him and things could work better for you in the future. Grandalf
One always has to remember that the farmers own the land. Some of them have some very funny ideas but without them and their 'permission' most of us wouldn't have anywhere to shoot at all.
picardy
I know how you feel mate, I have the same problem every harvest time ,but you never see the keepers shooting when it's bloody freezing cold ,and hard going !! Never mind keep smiling,at least we can have a few descent days shooting in between !!
Wiggum
I understand that it's a perk of his job but we spend all winter doing crop protection then he picks his days during harvest not letting anyone shoot even though having a couple more guns covering other fields would be beneficial.
