nige123
Hi chaps just a quick question please , I know ideally you should hang your Deer Carcass in a chiller but a tall Fridge has just come up as a freebee would it be ok for storage or not ? Cheers in advance Nige
toontastic
Tall fridges are quite common for hanging the smaller species of deer. You can even get a kit from Bushwear to convert your fridge. As I only ever shoot a few roe I'm looking into buying a tall fridge to chill them down. Redgum
I use a larder fridge, I can prize in 4 munties or 2 roe or one fallow (that's head and legs off). The main thing is to make a frame or something to hang the deer from as high up inside the fridge as possible, I made an alley frame that sits in the existing rail slots. The fridge temps seem to fluctuate a bit due to the thermostat but using a digital thermometer with the senser put into butt hole of the carcass I find they keep at a constant temp( this is why you should always test a fridge temp by putting a thermometer in a glass of water). The most important factor of long hanging a carcass is clean and dry, cut out any muck around bullet hole and dry out cavity with cloth or the like, if there is any grollock spilt ( yes I know it shouldn't go into the food chain in theory but is fine for own consumption) then a little white vinegar on a cloth will clean it up. moose man
I used a drinks chiller for a few years before building a coldroom , as said a frame work inside did the trick , I used some 2x2 to make the sides & a steel rod across to hang the deer from ..the temperature remained fairly constant at about 3degrees .
