Freelander 2003 TD4 clutch problem

Hello all,

The hydrolic clutch on my freelander is progressively getting harder to engage. The pedal has dropped 3" from its normal position. I have to press down really hard to disengage the clutch to put the car into gear. On a cold day when the oil is thick its almost impossible. I cant find any leaks from the pedal or gearbox ect.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,

Yep done loads of em, first thing to try is a new master cylinder, they're fiddly to fit but no special tools or skills required, comes pre primed with half the pipe work and and quick fitting attachment..... should take a novice a lot less than an hour to sus it out

With luck that'll sort it, sometimes the slave starts to leak and if that's the case it's a 10 hour pain in the rear type job

Thanks Paul! You have instilled much hope in my quest for a cheap fix! There is no leak, so hopefully it is the master cylinder. :good:

Its just me and tools that dont mix too well...

.............if you have no oil leaking from the engine gearbox region...then as paul says it might not be the slave cylinder...................to change that a garage would charge £700-900 pounds..........saw a women in a garage once nearly have a hissy fit when told what was wrong and how much to repair it.........why landrover stuffed it in there god only knows !!

The master cylinder cap will peel off (supposed to be a sealed for life unit) with luck it's empty so try topping it up and if that works keeping it topped up is the short term solution.

If the leak is coming from the bell housing drain then yeah long term fix will be new concentric slave, for the time involved also fit a clutch and don't do things by half fit a master cylinder too, as said they're a filled for life unit and when one end breaks usually the others not far from busting too.

Horrible job!
