.222 and 40-45g bullets

Recommended Posts

Playing with ttsx 40g over varget today. Back to the drawing board on them. 3" at 100 is pants. Running around 2900 so time to slow them down by 300 and see what happens.

My 52 amax run only at 2650 and a good drop out at 400 but its a good round. Only 200 left so need more.

Never tried varget but had very good results for velocity and accuracy with h4198 and h322

Ramshot exterminator was also very good if a bit dirty.

They do seem a bit on the steady side velocity wise but if it works for you why change it :)

I had a couple of inch or varget left in one tub so thought it might be worth a go. It was pants.

R22 and n130 on cabinet, I will have to ask around for h322. I just wanted something less splatty on muntjac, everything else I have are varmin bullet.

Are you loading everything to same OAL Amazed?

Hi pal, Have got them set at different cols. but in reality it did very little to accuracy it was mainly for feeding off the top of the mag having only a 3 shot.

Have just got an part Box of 52gr amax to try but they may be a little more twitchy to seating depth having a scant ogive.

If you want some exact data mate I will pm you it no probs.

Yes please, data is always good.

I use benchmark behind the 52amax. I only load light 21.5gr and backed off and land by a lot. It around 1 mm back as I was having a few strange issue with the odd tight round. I just backed it off and put a 5 group test down and it was .75 group so stayed there.

Couldn't get benchmark in a few places and powder from hodgens is very patchy so now about to load with n130.

is this a .222?

that sounds very slow

my 60gr .222 loads are faster than that even in a 1:14" barrel twist. Any faster or much slower and they open up as you describe.

Varget also isnt listed for .222, assume that is for a reason

.223 varget loads are very high case fill ratios if not compressed

I have never got my head arpund this idea of faster is better in a rifle. The target species will know no difference. I never run a load flat out. What's the point, 52gr amax at 2650 is all I need.if I can shoot less than 2" group out at 400 why push it more. I'm not going to gain anything more other that burnt put barrel, more reloading costs and a fox dead a tiny bit quicker. I know my drops in the mildots so no need for me to speed.

The lee book shows varget on the 50 bullets but after reading Barnes data from 50gr ttsx it showed it was running 1gr lighter on ttsx compared to copper jacketed so I loaded varget a grain lighter as a Max load then reduced 10% to start. Chrony speed where around 2900. No pressure sighs at all but a more powder load would be compressed.

That's some shooting. :good: Give or take, that load is the same as my 22Hornet figures down-range and I couldn't hit the barn door that the fox was stood in front of.
