Anthony.D
Very reluctantly I'm going to semi-retire my spaniel following a snapped cruciate ligament, hopefully this will decrease the chances of the other knee going. It will be like severing my right arm, but probably best for him. So, that will mean getting another dog, another springer. The question is, a dog, or bitch? Hopefully I then won't need another dog for several years, so that decreases the need for a bitch. I've never had a bitch before, always dogs. Will two dogs together or a dog and a bitch be better? Any advice please?
andrew f
Two dogs might fight for dominance wish leads to nasty vet bills if they really go for it my dads two did then there's the bitch heat cycle might ruin beating and picking up days or you could breed from your trusty springer and keep a pup to bring on. so many pros and cons to this
Anthony.D
Thanks, yes I've thought about those scenarios. Does anyone keep a dog and a bitch together? Is it not wise? My dog is the biggest woose ever, but yes if another dog came into his patch who knows?
loriusgarrulus
We have six dogs that all live together, no problems. Dog and bitch are fine together, you just need to sort out stopping them breeding by either spay/neuter or vasectomy/ovectomy. Or separating them when bitch is in season twice a year. Dad thought the same with dogs and cutting his nuts off didn't help we always had a bitch and a dog together just got to keep track of her cycles so you don't end up with a litter of pups

Ours are fine together too but get a bit narky with one another only when a bitch is in season

WGD
I currently have two dogs and a spayed bitch all in one kennel, they have all been there for the last 2 years with no problems. Two dogs that fight with one another are no use to man nor beast, I think it's more likely to arise if you introduce another mature dog but even then it will just be sorting out the pecking order and provided you don't just intend to throw them in a kennel to slug it out it will be easily managed. If you are buying in a pup I wouldn't anticipate any problems at all. That said, a good friend buys in trained dogs when he needs then, he has 3 entire males at the moment with no problems other than initial rumbles or establish the pecking order. Anthony.D
Thanks all for the help, it has helped a lot. When the time comes then , I'll just go for what I think is the nicest pup, dog or bitch. We've had 2 dogs together before. Only once did we have a problem with a J.Russell, but they're a law unto themselves, so I'm not counting that. It was the dog/bitch scenario that I was worried about.
