Scully
Was going to post a link but although I can post a link to the relevant local rag, there's nothing about this article on-line, so had to buy the sodden' rag and will have to quote. Front page carries a smallish pic' and the headline 'Lethal Weapons- Police Reveal Amnesty Firearms Haul: Page 7'. On page 7 under the headline '130 guns handed to police' is a pic' of two coppers, one a Chief Inspector, posing with an impressive MP40 Schmeisser 'machine gun' .' Impressive until it is revealed that it is in fact not a 'lethal' weapon as it is de-activated. However, the report goes on to state that ' a lethal arsenal including a German machine gun......were handed in to police during a gun amnesty'. A 'number ' of weapons were from First World war vintage, including a 'long barrelled artillery Luger, a German Mauser and a British BSA gun'. 'Some of the models fired blanks, were replicas or were air weapons, but Insp Telford said it would be difficult for people to tell the difference....' 'Insp Telford said the guns included a significant number which were unlicensed', but didn't go into details, ( air guns for example, don't require licensing) and said there were 'also handguns'. He said ' They were illegally held, some had an obsolete calibre' but failed to mention that the latter are perfectly legal to own, and if those which weren't legally held were handed back to their owners.....'four or five would be of criminal interest to anyone with the 'right' (surely 'wrong'?) motive'. He finished by adding 'there are 130-plus firearms as well as a significant quantity of ammunition which has come in that cannot be stolen and used in any criminal activity, which benefits the whole of Cumbria and helps us keep it a safe place to live, work and visit'. So out of 130 'lethal weapons' in this 'lethal arsenal' the story only accounts for 3 which we can only assume weren't de-activated. Ah well.....as long as they're happy. evo
as usual they always blow things out of proportion, but to someone whom hasn,t got a clue about firearms they will think there safe now,, typical police nonsense regarding firearms, I bet the copper showing them off hasn,t got a clue about them either atb Evo
Westley
The annoying point is, some of these guns and the ammunition have been around since the first World War and have remained undiscovered by both Police and Criminals. The owners knew where they were and the fact that they were being illegally held, but they HAVE remained out of the hands of the criminal fraternity. To listen to the Police press release, it sounds as though they have been removed from the hands of Criminals, but I think that we know the truth, that is, these guns would have continued to be unfound until handed over to Police or RFD. grrclark
A story about the true facts wouldn't sell any papers though. The headline of 'gun amnesty bags a haul of air guns, replicas and deactivated guns which posed no inherent threat to anybody and which were perfectly legally held' just isn't snappy enough.
