bishop
Having just picked up an AYA 10 bore i was concerned about putting gamebore rhinos through the gun as they state 1370 on the cases.Nitro steel are well within tolerances so thats fine and the winchester supremes seem well used by many aya owners although there is no clarity on the boxes as to what pressure they generate..However after discussing the lack of C.I.P guidelines regarding 10 bore steel cartridges with BASC i would like to confirm what cartridges forum users have been putting through their s/s,o/u tens.I understand most use what they feel safe with but with a gun taken out to 1/2 chokes or opened up even more has anyone been using rounds up to the 1320/1370 pressure levels through their doubles?? oliver90owner
I very much doubt the choke tube will be the limiting factor as the pressure will be far lower when the charge is that far up the barrel. The test pressure is quoted near the chamber and the exit pressure (at the choke tube section of the barrel) will depend on the rate of burn for the powder. A fast burn powder will give a high pressure at the breech, but perhaps less total gas volume, which would equate to a lower pressure at the muzzle. Chokes with steel shot have different issues, I would have thought, although I am no expert on ballistics. RAB
bishop
I agree rab .Had a good blab though with BASC and we may have some solid advice in the magazine in the near future regarding this overlooked issue. My AYA although proofed at 1200,by modern proofing methods is within the tolerance of the more modern 1320 it seems but sadly without sending it down to get reproofed(if they even were wiling to do this) for steel you take a risk.I have a few rhinos here i was putting through the sp-10 but at 48g weight and their velocity at 1400 added on they are apparently too hefty a load for my AYA.Pity ,but i can use them up through the sp-10 i suppose until i've sold it. AberFowl
I use rhino steel through my Basque 10 gauge, half and 3/4 chokes. Used a good 100 through it now with no problems Gun shows a proof mark of same as your AYA
bishop
I was on the phone earlier to a gunsmith i have used in the past and he did agree that the rhinos should be fine thru the AYA.I'm sending the gun off after the seasons finished to get it superior proofed as its ony 60 quid or so.I'm happy enough to use the rhinos now i reckon. No harm in getting the gun through a reproofing though as it wil take the uncertainty out of the issue. How are you finding the rhinos??I reckon they are pretty good rounds myself.Best i have used in 10 bore steel shop bought. bishop
Agreed it will be the same gun you get back but for insurance purposes if you had an accident caused by the gun itself you would be able to make a legitimate claim.peace of mind along with a better resale value as "steel shot proofed".
