TACDAVE
All When I was cleaning the shotguns post a days shooting today I noticed that 3/4 of the length of the bore had a quantity of what appeared to be un-burnt powder flakes in it. What would cause this? I was using RC Romagnola which where purchased yesterday so as far as I am aware they have been manufactured recently. The cartridges were stored overnight at room temperature etc. The only thing I can think of was when we got out in the field this morning the ambient temperature was around freezing but rose to circa 5 degrees C around noon. They were kept at the back of the hide in a waterproof cartridge bag still in the manufactures boxes ahead of be used. Any Ideas?
Bad Monkey
Cold cartridges do tend to leave a powder residue in the barrels, some worse than others. Some folk warm them on a radiator before shooting. Some keep a hand warmer in their cartridge bag, all personal preference.

darren m
I,m using gamebore steel at the mo and they are filthy, I tried warming them up overnight on the rads but it made no difference. so I,m guessing there just poor quality carts. the unburnt powder in my auto is shocking to the point that it either clogs up or I get a flame thrower effect from the port every 25 carts more or less

rbrowning2
Buy a cartridge loaded with double base propellant like RC sipe and you should notice an improvement as double base powders burn better in the cold compared to single based powders. That's why it is used a lot in game cartridges. Sipe being a double based powder. Note sure how many clay cartridges use double based powders as they tend to be more expensive than single base. norfolk dumpling
Fibre wads? These leave my barrels looking as if unburnt powder present. Very noticeable with Gamebore through my 20g.
Guest cookoff013
most likely its height (max pressure) or length of the PK1" pressure curve. i used a single base powder and it is phenomenally clean but is running at 700bar or so. if cartridges get damp, ie in a humid atmosphere they loose performance, most likely they drop in pressure too. they can do this in the cold. the development of different type of powders to overcome this is only the half truth, because most cartridges clean up at around 10000psi, and that is near the 10,770psi (740bar) limit here. what can you do? ignore the problem.
