nnorman32
Hi, So I am taking lessons and working on a CPSA course so that I am safe and behave responsibly on the clay pigeon range when my SGS comes through. Whilst I intend to get an OU 12g, I am considering the idea of a semi auto as well but would prefer to walk before I can run. I have not seen any training courses other than a Practical shotgun safety weekend for semi auto shotgun . Does anyone have experience of this sort of weekend or is it better to get some lessons if I do get a Semi Auto? Advice please. N
The Mighty Prawn
Practical is very different to clays and realistically you'd need an fac shotgun with a high capacity magazine. At the risk of getting slaughtered for saying all instructors I will say most instructors at a clay ground will be able to teach good safety for o/u and semi while you have a lesson so getting good value for money. stokie
If you are using a club gun at the training session just ask if there's a semi auto available
brett1985
gun safety is gun safety. it will be the same regardless of what gun your using. muzzle awareness is the main thing, followed by unsleeving and loading etc. loading will probably be the main area of difference in my opinion, but its really more common sense than anything else. keep the muzzle down range when dropping a shell in and operating the bolt release. simples. if in any doubt, a good instructor will be able put your mind at ease. notsosureshot
In addition to what has been said, when I switched to a semi auto, I made sure to read the manual for it several times to familiarise myself with the procedures for jams, misfires and so on, which of course is slightly more complex than for an over under. There are lots of videos on youtube for popular models of gun and even watching these can help you with what to expect. I also found it very helpful to dismantle the gun for cleaning a few times, right down to its individual components. It helps familiarise you with your gun. If you're not comfortable doing this alone, I'm sure a more experienced shot might pop around for the price of a cup of tea and a biscuit. As someone said, have a go with club guns first, you might find you prefer a SxS!
