Steve321
Hi fellow members really new to the site and to pigeon shooting for that matter but really enjoying reading all the threads you guys put up as every bit of info helps at the moment i have struck it lucky with a farmer 15minutes from my front door who has give me permission to his 2000 acres of rough shooting which come in with the syndicate I joined last year anyway cutting to the chase I'm based in Portsmouth hants and am after shot pigeons for training with my spaniel I'm happy to pay for birds 50p each or whatever and to travel a little to collect I'd only be after 10-20 at a time and I no it's peanuts but might help towards cartridges until I build up all the kit and knowledge it takes to start picking off these elusive woodies any help would be great
Penelope
Pigeons are not the best for cold game retrieve training because of the very loose feathers.
Andylea
This time of year look out for road kill,pheasant/duck,if your training a young dog pigeons are the worst bird to use like the last post said loose feathers, only start your dog on pigeons when you are getting good confident retrieves time after time. aga man
Welcome to the forum Steve, as already pointed out woodpigeons are not the best for training a young dog as they can foul up the dog's mouth with feathers. Feral pigeons are better for this purpose and can easily be shot with air rifle from farmers barns etc. A couple of wings strapped to a canvas dummy can also help to introduce the dog to feather. Steve321
Cheers for the info guys she's rock solid on pheasants and the reason for the pigeons is to get her used to picking them up looks like I might have to get out there myself and try and bag some

Andra
I trained my cocker to pick up pigeons by putting them in tights, I think I read this in a spaniel training book.... Once he was happy with that I started sending him out of the hide to pick the odd one then just built upon that.
