shootgun
I was looking forward to this Friday past as a new challenge was lying ahead, stalking ground i never been on. Morning was showing good signs, loads of slots and droppings but everything on the floor was dry as a bone and every step had a loud resonance in the quietness of the ancient woods... Wind changed all the time making the stalking even more chalenging but after an hour or so, i caught movement with the corner of my eye and a quick scan through the binos confirmed i had a doe an a follower on my right, but imposible to get a shot due to the thick cover. I setted up on the sticks and and waited, once again the wind changed and they scented me and started stotting away, but once in a clearance the follower stopped and looked back... that was all i needed, squized the trigger and i saw no reaction to the shot, and it diseapered in the woods... I was %100 it was a clean miss, and unconvinced i proceded to were the young buck was standing, some 150 yards away, and just about when i was about to give up, i found blood and fur on the floor , and a clear blood trail leading into the tickness of the woods. After following the steady trail, i found it dead more than 100 yards away... The gralloch revelead that it had no lungs left, and how did it managed to run that far after shot, is beyond me.... As the day went on, continued stalking and more deer crossed my path but again no shot presented itself, due to the cover. Stopped for a nice cooked lunch, and again stalking trough the day, and the same cover didn't let me pull the trigger, so decided to end the day in the high seat... The sun was going down fast and i was watching a roe doe with to kids grazing unaware of my presence, while still waiting for the fallow to show up... One of the kids suddenly became unsettled, looking into the woods and jumping back again, when i probably got 10 minutes of daylight left... quick scan through the binos again and what looked to be a fallow pricked made an appearance at about 130 yards away... Looked again to confirm and yes it was a malformed buck with some tiny and twisted antlers, the perfect cull beast... Didn't wasted any more time, the high seat gave me a nice stady shooting platform, squizzed the trigger and the 130 grains Barnes TSX struck home. Found the buck 5 yards away from the strike site, and with the night upon me, proceded to gralloch and extraction... A great day to end the week... Forgot to put the 9,3 barrel on as i wake up late, i'll give it a go tomorrow...
