Thumbstick Lyre

Recommended Posts

Once upon a time, A handsome lord was walking through his kingdom, to the little house in the woods where his parents lived! After leaving 30 bags of gold for his poor parents, he made his way home along the long winding path through the estate. There laying on the ground was a rather large junction of privet.

This got the handsome lord thinking! What can I do with this big chunk of privet? After much deliberation, he decided to make a thumbstick lyre from it!

Stuff that!

I decided to make a Lyre. I took the bark off and sanded the privet down to a useable blank, and started planning what to do with it. I had a bit of Antler left over from another stick so cut 2 collars and hollowed them out. Then the tops of the lyre were reduced in size to allow the antler to slide over the wood.

Once glued in place with resin, I started to open the collar to accept a couple of 20g cart bases. Then I got to thinking!

I popped out the primers and ground them down to amost nothing, replaced them in the cart base and then used resin to bond in a very strong magnet into each base. These were then in turn bonded into the collars and a coat of resin placed over the top to keep them shiney and protected from the rain.

I finally sanded the lyre down to a nice smooth finish and reduced the neck down to fit a hazel blank I have seasoning until around november.

The lyre now not only looks really good, but doubles up as a cartridge pick up device.

I will sort a few pics when I get 5 mins and my thumb stops hurting, Hammers and thumbs don't mix well
