Schmitty
Do cartridges have a best before date or deteriorate with age? The reason I ask is that I've recently bought some cartridges that have a batch date of May 2013. After shooting only 1 cartridge tthrough each barrel they both left lots or residue in the barrels. It may be that it is just how this particular cartridge is but thought I'd ask the question anyway. Edited May 18, 2015 by Schmitty
The Juicer
I've been shooting 12g cartridges I've had for near 20 years, no issues. They were stored in an ammo can indoors.
AdamSouthEast
Cartridges, if left in a cool, dry place should last a lifetime. At least that's what I'm lead (no pun intended) to believe.
fenboy
3 or 4 years ago I was given about 500 cartridges that dated from the 1970s , I used them all without a single miss fire
Schmitty
Thanks for the answers chaps.... Guess the residue is just from the particular cartridge then (Gamebore Wild Game)
Andy H
Do not worry about it just run a cleaning mop down the barrel's
Grandalf
Army ammo was often 20 odd years old - Still went bang.
Imperfection
I once had some military surplus .303 ammo that was so old the actual bullet wasnt sharp-it were round. A quick look on Wiki says it would have been manufactured around 1904 and it still went bang. Oldest shotgun cartridges would be some Baikal i was given a few years ago which were over 30 years old and they too went bang.
