Afternoon on the Sugar Beet

A call from my brother in-law on Monday that the pigeons were on the Beet and I scanned the calendar to see how soon I could get out and this afternoon I was down there. On arrival there were he grins as they had not seen a bird all day but were sure there would be some around.

I set-up between two sugar beet fields along a hedge with the wind to my back. I set-up a hide for Bleu and I and set-out decoys in a loose pattern 20 yards in front and beyond with most on the edge of the traditional U-shape and one or two in the middle. We had not been in the hide more then five minutes and the first birds came in and one dropped. Blue sat and waited and on command went off and performed a perfect retrieve. The birds came in fits and starts and when they did they came from all directions. Some came in low and fast flaring at the last minute to land amongst friends only to be met by a storm of number 6 lead from the Gamebore Clear Pigeon. Some came from behind low and swooped down into the decoys and spun to face the wind. Some were not so keen and came in high and spotted Bleu or me and flared away catching the wind and exiting the stage at great speed. I tried placing a floater to bounce in the wind but this seemed to put them off so I removed this and tried a flapper but this lured them in but they stayed well out of range so I brought that in.

It seemed they just wanted to see their static friends and again the action was sporadic and fast.... We set-up at 15:30 and by 17:00 we had bagged twelve woodies, three feral and half a crow..... I say half as I shot him as he veered away and he lost a good many tail feathers and some of these were bloody but he still managed to fly off..... After 17:00 it all went quite. the flight lines changed and they no longer came across the fields but followed the hedge lines and Blue and I were just to visible to most. some strayed in but with the wind in their wings so soon flared and shot away.

A good afternoons shooting, not the biggest of bags but 15 for 35 shots is not all bad.

As for Blue.... well he had a great time and is now fast asleep on the sofa snoring away.
