Cost of getting into reloading

Recommended Posts

Right guys, I'm torn between the RCBS Rock Chucker Master Supreme kit and the Hornady Lock n Load Classic and having a real dilemma. Is one better than the other? Any opinions please guys, I will be reloading .223 and .17 Hornet on them.

Many thanks

The Hornady LNL is a good press, well made and the casting nicely machined. My only little gripe is the priming arm. It is a good single primer, and it does this job very well, plenty of feel and consistent. The problem is that when de-capping, to use the little plastic tray to collect the spent primers, you still need this arm in place to divert the spent primer. Sometimes the arm doesn't swing down under gravity and you can get the old primer in the primer seating pocket which is fiddly. Not a deal breaker. Very pleased with the press.

I looked at the kits but realised that there was a lot of stuff in them that would drive me mad. In the end bought just the press and I went for a lee scoop set and a lyman electronic scale with a manual trickler that clips on the side. I choose the next size down for my powder in the scoops to bulk load the scale then top up with the trickler. Effortless.

The scale is so good it got used for measuring out the mg of metabisulphate (same as Campden tablets) for this years elderflower champagne batch!

Marnold - if you're buying on-line Dauntsey Guns in Wiltshire most likley have the kits. Give them a buzz if you're thinking of buying as they are very helpful and will be able to let you know what is in them.

Yeah they're a nice bunch of guys and were very helpful to me. I think they also do RCBS presses too as per Saddler's recommendation (checked and yep they do http://www.dauntseyguns.co.uk/products.php?cat=52020).

I believe their stock control on the website is linked to their tills so if they say they have one in stock when you look on line they are sure to actually have it!

Oh top tip - get a cheap lee de-capper die so this can get dirty when you decap rather than your nice sizing dies which will then only see cleaned cases.

The whole seating depth/ogive AOL thing ideally requires a Hornady gauge. I tried at first to get by with doing it the low cost way by chambering with an empty cartridge fitted with a bullet painted with marker pen (to see the land marks). I didn't get consistent results so relented and got a Hornady gauge and all the gizmos. This then leads to frustration with seating dies (setting up when you change bullet weights) and so a Forster seating die with a depth scale followed.

This is a hobby and is therefore intended to relieve your wallet of cash.............. :sad1:
