Just had the call - Now what cabinet to get?

Well, i'm a happy bunny, just had a call this morning from my FEO to tell me that my certificate has been granted and that he just needs to see and check a cabinet installed now...

I've also been contacted by my local rifle club (only been on the waiting list for 18 months... lol) and should be starting probationary there within a few weeks, things are finally falling in to place.

Really impressed by Hertfordshire's service and cant fault them at all, Application to 'grant' has taken a couple of days over a months (or would have had security been in place already) :)

So i guess i now need to order up a cabinet but i'm not sure what to get... it's going to be going in the loft so it has to be happy lying on its back and also while i know it's going to be heavy, it needs to be able to go through a loft hatch mostly by my own power, i'm not little but i've gotta be sensible about it and if the bug really bites i'd probably have to go for multiple cabinets as opposed to one big one due to location ;)

Have a good look at lokaway. Their cabinets have a brilliant locking mechanism and are very reasonably priced.

OK will do...

Does it really have to go in the loft? Aside from condensation issues it will also be a pita going up there to get Ur gun. Didn't ur Feo come up with any alternative locations ?

It does unfortunately, i don't own the property and that is the only place that the owner has agreed for it to go, luckily access is easy enough, it's got one of those pull down ladders attached to the hatch and i'm tall enough to just grab it and have it down...

You might find it a struggle getting anything much over a 4 Gun cab into the loft on your tod unless one of lighter construction. I think that my 6 gun cab weighs in at close on 90Kg! Condensation may well be an issue as mentioned. If the landlord says it's ok, you might get round this by building an oversized ply box, insulating the inside and fitting the gun cabinet inside the insulated box. If it were mine, I'd also add plenty of silica gel bags too.

Some good tips there thank you :)

So i've been thinking that maybe a 3/4 gun cab to be fitted for now, and then 'if' i go FAC (which won't be for a while) i'll add another in place next to it with a built in or separate ammo safe... Someone elsewhere has said that with it lying down it is possible to actually keep more guns in then the 'quoted' number if it comes to it as a temporary measure...

I will get a couple of VP90 packs to go in the safe, not sure if that will make enough of a difference, there is power in the loft so a heat mat or something similar isn't out of the realms of possibility if condensation does become an issue...

Has anyone ever seen/used a GDK cabinet as sold on eBay, they are very cheap but are made locally to me so could easily go and pick one up or is it better to stick to a tried and trusted brand (Brattonsound etc)

Make sure any air vents up there are clear as it will help stop condensation. I would also put a couple of moisture traps up there and a VP90 patch within the cabinet.

What size did you get? Any complaints at all?

Well, i've pondered over it for a few days now and taken advice from on here and elsewhere, given where it has to go and that i'm new to the hobby/sport i've decided to just get a 3 gun cabinet for now and i'm far from made of money so it'll take a while to fill those gaps anyway if i do feel that way inclined...

I know the loft is far from ideal but it's the only choice I have unfortunately and given I will have to get it up there myself weight is a consideration as well, I'm going to get a couple of VP90 packs to go in it and if condensation is still an issue i'll look in to other methods as well...

I'm going to give the GDK cabinet from eBay a go and see what the quality is like, if it turns out ok and i do need more storage space at a later date for more guns or FAC then for the sake of £75 i can easily put another one or 2 next to it, again not ideal but i'm working around what i have with regards to space, access and muscle power lol

I've also contacted BakerBoy via PM about having a coaching session or 2 maybe before gun purchase and after and potentially some gun fitting advice when the time comes, i guess what guns to think of and look out for within my budget will be my next question...

I just want to thank everyone for their help, this seems like a really friendly forum full of good advice and as a 'noob' i'm sure there will be plenty more stupid questions to come...

Thanks

Paul

Has the FEO "OK'd" the safe going into the loft?

It is not one of their favourite places as some believe you are more than likely not to bother, (not my words) my son has his in the loft, Bedfordshire.

Safes come up regularly on PW always look out for them, most are real bargains.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yeah all cleared with the FEO, the loft is easy to get to (hatch with pull down ladder), mostly boarded and has light/power so he was fine with the idea of it, i've bought some more boards today just to give total coverage and have another light fitting to go in as well, more for me than anything else so i can have the cabinet well lit.

Now i've got one on order just so i can get my grant finished in a timely fashion, second hand would probably be a good way to go if i need any further storage ;)

If you have power up there you could always run a small dehumidifier when condensation is likely to be an issue during cold weather but if the loft space has good ventilation you should be fine with a VP90 in the cabinet and a moisture trap just outside it.

Are you bolting it to the gable?

Both very good idea's ;)

No, will be coach bolted to the rafters through the boarding which is on the floor ;)

At one time i had my gun cabinet bolted to the loft rafters,

I removed some of the loft insulation just under the case an put a thermal blanket over the case and had no problems.as long as loft is well vented it will be fine.

in very cold weather you could use some kind of heat mat (if you have power) like a snake or spider heat mat put on the out side of the case they come in all sizes an very low on power.

just some ideas.

All fitted now and a message left for my FEO that it's now all in place so the waiting begins again, can't complain though, been treated very well and quickly by Hertfordshire so far :)

Hertfordshire were superb with my certificate grant, the process from the interview to getting my certificate was only a week. My cabinet is also in the loft, although my house is brand new and the loft is floored etc, my guns are fine. Just be sure to put a VP90 in there and make sure you put them away dry
