Beagle boy
Evening all, in pretty new to the shotgun and decoying world. I've got around. 25-30 decoys half being fully bodied. I've been doing a decent amount on the clays to build up my own confidence and ability. Been out yesterday evening but I got out abit late but got 9. And got out this afternoon for 2-3 hours and got 13. I've been doing a kind of v formation on my decoys and they tend to decoy pretty well and cominted to the pattern well enough but then some just wernt interested at all. Has anyone got any tips for me as to how wide to make pattern or does it depend on the day? Also I've been using 32g 6's which is fine for longish 40 yard birds but it seems to be abit too hard for close range ones. What carts do you lads use? Cheers rob
Shooterluke
I would save a bit of money mate an shoot 7.5 28 gram for upto 40 yards will cleanly kill pigeons through 1/4 an 1/2 i would also invest in a flapper magnet on the right day can transform your day
Beagle boy
I presume on a flapper you'd have to put dead birds on? Are there any makes that or better or worse makes, I'd rather buy sumat decent as hopefully I'll do plenty in the future. Cheers rob
hambone
Hello and welcome, the cartridges you are using are good for the longish birds and the close ones. A lighter and smaller shot is ok for closer work but not so good if you want to push out the distance. Do the maths and if you are shooting them as they drop into your pattern you can go smaller shot and weight but if they are passing / flaring away stick with what you're doing

Shooterluke
No offence but a 7.5 will kill easily upto 40 yard distance maybe further if roosting i would you 6s or flight line shooting 7.5 is spot on for decoy work

It got there by being so useful in a range of situations and pigeons not committing to decoys is one of those
