Badgerpig
Hi Recently bought a second hand 3 metre zodiac folding transom RIB with a GRP hull. I'll be using it on Sea Lochs and its currently in clean condition so keen to protect the keel from chips and scratches. Researched on net and found various rubber products (keel shield, keel guard etc) but they're all crazy money (£150+) for what essentially looks like a strip of rubber glued along the keel. Already spent my pocket money on the boat itself and keen to avoid further wrath from the boss so tempted to just buy a 1 metre rubber strip from fleabay (£3) and bond it on to the front of the keel but dont want to mess the boat up if theres a reason people pay silly money for the real deal? Thanks
remmy1100
ive a rib and jetski both with keel protectors fitted and your right there dam expensive but my mate doesnt have one and his keel is chipped and cracked with beaching it mine is still spot on even when running it up beach at speed.if you go ebay route id be looking for something heavy duty and with a bit width so you can get a good surface area bond. Chris Bb
I'd be looking at thin brass or similar rather than rubber.
islandgun
is it just on the keel ? then a metal keel band, tbh i'm not sure a bit of rubber glued on is going to do the job, the underside of a rib has a lot pounding, shame to watch the rubber wash off

Badgerpig
thanks for replies, its a single skin GRP boat, great for saving weight but not very substantial design dont think I could go brass route will have a look on ribnet but i think the best bet is just to get the proper job fitted and not tell the missus cheers Edited August 5, 2015 by Badgerpig
keg
As someone once said, owning a boat is like standing in a hole in the water lined with fiberglass and throwing ten pound notes into it. Followed by " There are two days of happiness with owning a boat. They day you buy it..and the day you sell it"
Andy H
How do you end up with a small fortune , Start with a large fortune and buy a boat. Buy the real deal and try to ignore the bleeding ear's.
markm
I know nothing about boats but I always thought it was. RHIB (rigid hull, inflatable boat. Or body). Is that the same as a rib? Edited August 6, 2015 by markm
keg
Yes, certainly the description is the same. It may have started like that and shortened to RiB at some stage.
