TIDES EDGE Posted February 1, 2016 Report Share Posted February 1, 2016 As title says what is eating the fresh water mussels out of our lake there are large amounts of shells stacked up under the brambles on the waters edge all around the lake and out on the island.We have not seen any signs of otters and there are no near rivers ,do mink or rats dive down for them have not seen any mink but rats are always about, the lake is in Kent. Penelope Posted February 1, 2016 Report Share Posted February 1, 2016 Could they be dying, gasing up then floating into the margins, where they are being picked up by rats, etc. On the Rhone in France, there is a species of mussel that when it dies, floats to the surface and then the catfish pick them off. Happens for a short period each year.
