Savhmr
I made one years ago from Rosewood sides and rosewood veneered top and base with the intention of felt lining the insides (never got round to that!). I'd recommend 9mm baltic birch ply class AB, veneered with a flexi-backed veneer (use titebond PVA to glue it, and apply a little heat with an iron to get it to grab. Then smooth with a wooden veneer hammer or roller before trimming the edges. That or use contact adhesive but be warned, once in place, it's in place and can't be re-positioned of using contact adhesive). Once veneered, for durability, something like a General Finishes satin or gloss top coat can be used or you can go the whole hog and use a finsihing oil or Danish oil built up in coats. Having it leather covered is also a good shout and a lot easier . You can do it yourself if you get the leather and the leather fixing pins (dome headed). A little glue (fabric glue) helps. I've used copydex in the past.
