fieldwanderer
thinking about applying for a bigger rifle than my .22 lr some time soon, may consider a .17 hmr but prefferably something bigger for foxes and long range rabbiting etc. but there's alsorts arround the same size, .222, .223, 22-250 etc. what's cheapest to run, best for the kind of work I intend it for and comes up regularly at a good price / second hand? anything other than .22 lr's a bit unknown to me so any help would be much appreciated. I'd also like to load my own when I get one so that's something to bear in mind

I'd also like to load my own when I get one so that's something to bear in mind I have just bought a .22 hornet within the last couple of months and have just loaded up 200rds of HP using 13grns of Lil’Gun. This is a VERY cheap round to load for and is proving to be very accurate with that particular loading. Haven’t taken a fox yet, but have no doubt whatsoever that it will be much better than the .17hmr I used to own. G.M.
JohnGalway
For fox .223 (I've returned to the faithful ), bit expensive for rabbiting but then again it'd depend on how much of that you would do.

stevethevanman
22 hornet upwards will be fine for foxing and long range rabbiting, but the majority will go with 222 or 223 the cost of ammo really depens on how much you are going to be using it
JohnGalway
Not as yet Mark - I'll start a thread on that when I get around to doing something about it (too busy with lambing right now). I had been looking at some other calibres out of interest but to be honest for the foxing I do you can't beat the .223.
Big Dog
In NI we can't get a .223 for field shooting but Hornet or .222 OK. I love the .222. It is a powerful wee pill and is very accurate. My first fox with it was about 175yrds and it went right through the shoulder and left a 3" hole on the other side. Ammo will be more expensive that .223 but reloading will cut that away down. It is a lot of gun for a bunny unless you are shooting from away out. I shot my first bunny two weekends ago and it shot, skinned, cleaned out and half cook it My pick: .22lr for bunnies .222 or .223 for the rest. kip270
.222/.223 Both very accuarte and a great Vermin/Fox round, plus legal for Roe deer in Scotland
fieldwanderer
.222/.223 Both very accuarte and a great Vermin/Fox round, plus legal for Roe deer in Scotland that's something I'd like to do one day, if I can ever afford to. so .222 / .223's definitely worth a look. What sort of cost, ammo wise, would I be looking at? Including if I re-load?
Oly
.22lr for rabbits .243 for fox
luckytrigger
Im going for .223 as my land is already cleared for that calibre plus the ammo seems cheaper.
kip270
.222/.223 B) Both very accuarte and a great Vermin/Fox round, plus legal for Roe deer in Scotland that's something I'd like to do one day, if I can ever afford to. so .222 / .223's definitely worth a look. What sort of cost, ammo wise, would I be looking at? Including if I re-load? The cost fo running a .222, Factory Ammo around £14-15 per 20. If you get into reloading, £14 per 100 bullet heads, primers a couple of quid, tub of powder from£30-£40, so reloading is a lot cheaper plus they will be more accurate
