Dasher
I've been given some CCI 209 Shot Shell primers, I have never used them before as I have not seen any data for them for reloading .410 with Lil'Gun powder in cheddite shells, so now the obvious question.....can they be used safely? Before anyone starts yes I have searched and yes I have always gone with published data and I have no intention of using the primers in question without a sensible answer! Kind Regards Dasher
Underdog
All I will say is, I use what ever primer I have to hand except for magnum primers and use magnum primers when instructed. Others will mock me but never blown a gun up and still have both eyes and all my fingers, oh and have used thousands of CCI shot shell primers. Underdog
Believe me, the primer alone will not push the gun with recognised appropriate powders beyond what it has already been subjected to at proofing.
robbiep
As Underdog says. 410 shotgun barrels are ridiculously over-engineered. I've seen a number of videos (from the USA, where else !) where they've loaded various high-powered 44-based rounds into a 410 shotgun, and the gun has coped with the pressure admirably. The most insane was a .454 Casull, which is something like 5 times the recommended pressure for a 410. It was fired out of an old Cooey single-barrel shotgun, and the bore was even measured before and after, with no deformation. The shotgun, though mounted on a frame and strapped down, did end up several yards away from it's starting position, however.
Dasher
Thankyou for your replies . I know what you mean about the strength of .410 barrels I've seen some pretty stupid things put through them on Youtube etc. I have a tank like single Baikal so I think I could get away with a slightly hot load but don't fancy trying a .454 round! I have very limited .410 loading experience, read into that as I've only ever loaded 1 recipe as published by Hodgdon for cheddite shells, mind you it has served me well for over 2000 shells, so please understand my trepidation for using something not familiar to me! On a side note I have some Eley Trap 2.5" plastic wadded cartridges to try having bought them on a whim, does anyone have any experience of reloading these cases, I know the Eley fibre shells bulge on firing and don't re-chamber well after reloading. Many Thanks Dasher
Underdog
Think most 410 swell pretty soon in the end bud.
Floating Chamber
Fiocchi seem to have thicker plastic. As long as I don't use fibre in them, they chamber well.
Uncle Albert
I use Fiocchi hulls for reloading and they work fine. They do seem to have thicker plastic but I still tend to chuck them after 3 firings. However that is for 12g, not 410.
