SimpleSimon
I was training my dog in one of the local parks today (this park has some good areas of rough reeds, etc so it's not the usual manicured urban lawn) and she was admittedly on very good form. Better, really, than usual. As I was putting her back in the car a chap called to me over his garden wall that backs on to the park. I half expected to be accused of making too much noise or being a cruel wildlife killer or something, but he told me he'd been watching me and really liked to see somebody training a dog properly. I could have burst with pride being complimented by a stranger. I had to chuckle to myself as I drove away though, wondering what he'd have said if he'd witnessed her not so long ago in a different park go flying out for a long seen retrieve, have a half ***** look for it and then decide to go off hunting elsewhere instead, after checking over her shoulder that I was too far away to stop her. So, what are some of your best and worst dog moments? No judging, no training advice or critique, tell us how proud you've been of your dog and then how much you've wanted to strangle it or have the ground swallow you. fenboy
My battle of will with my Lab Milo have been well documented on here , he was not the first dog I had trained but he was the first I had serious problems wit The worst moments were when he would run as far as the eye could see because he had seen another dog or person and he wanted to say hello or play with them , totally ignoring the stop whistle and any attempt to get him back . His work on the marsh this year has made me think much more of him though and I have been very proud of some difficult retrieves he has made. I have now just about finished training my younger lab and thankfully that has gone much smoother , though he still has much experience to gain on the job. Now I am starting to train another pup for someone else and its nice that someone will put that trust in you.

UKPoacher
About 30 years ago I had a pet GSD bitch who I had trained to a very low level to retrieve. Mainly widgeon from a farm pond and a few walked up partridge. She was a big, long haired dog who could take a man down, but had a lovely nature. I decided to take her on Beater's Day, just for a walk. I hadn't intended to shoot, but to carry the game for the lads and enjoy the day out. On the day it had snowed overnight, that fine powdery stuff that balls up in spaniel's leg feathers. None of the lads had brought their dogs. They didn't need much of an excuse not to bring their dogs on beater's day as it usually entailed them flushing and not shooting for most of the time. I had the only dog and so I let her flush in front of the 8 guns, guiding her left and right by whistle and hand signals. She quickly picked it up and began to zig-zag across the line, bounding over the snow drifts and generally having a great time. At the end of the day, she had flushed and retrieved over 50 pheasants. I was chuffed to bits with her and the following season she took her place in the beating line. She always ensured that I had plenty of room in the cramped trailer

Cheers, it's still a lot of ups and downs with her to be honest mate, but she's not 2 yet and still maturing, definitely takes after the GWP in that regard. Hoping I might be able to get a few days rough shooting out of her next season, plenty of time to iron out the creases! Your wee cocker must still be young? We'll have to get out and compare notes. Yeah I go over there now and again plus a few other spots to keep her (and me!) interested. Drop me a PM if you fancy a meet up. I think my bitch is coming in season though so might not be just yet. She keeps running off to sniff backsides!
