Fuji Shooter
Right so I am about to order a full tilt and canvas for my Series 3 ready for paint next month. Does anyone have an experience which is the best canvas to go for? I was going to order one from Exmoor Trim but then someone told me Under Cover in Birmingham is much better so now I am confused. ditchman
im in the same position..........i think im going to go for "under covers".......they are a bit cheaper as they arnt registered for VAT...and they use the same spec canvas as exmoor trim........they also know each other...the bloke who started exmoor trim used to work for steve in Birmingham ................ ........if you wanted something that was not standard ie; plastic ...special order...special colour i would go for exmoor trim..........but if you want to keep it standard and original go for Birmingham......... Fuji Shooter
Cheers Ditchman. I originally contacted Under Covers about making me a tonneau for the back as I was originally going with a truck cab setup. They were £140 cheaper than Exmoor for the same spec product. I only want a standard "Sand" canvas with a rear window so I will give them a bell and see what their timescale is. I know they wanted 8 weeks for the tonneau. I will also get a canvas bonnet spare wheel made up too.
rodp
There's a lot more to the spec than just the canvas (although obviously it's a large part) Good quality No4 brass grommets are over 30p ea trade, (some use plated), No12 polycotton thread by Sowmac is £28 a cob (some use cheaper), Bronze nato spec strap fitting can be horrendously expensive (some use plated) etc, etc. Expect to pay for quality. Funnily enough I had a NAS spec PVC hood come back today for repair, we made it app 21 years ago , he paid the price for good materials at the time but it's worked out cheaper in the long run Both those manufacturers are reputable though, but maybe ask a few questions if a lot of money. ditchman
the canvas quality is not as good as it was a few years ago..........the only place you can get the old quality is america....i believe EU regs are responisble for the change in the manufacturing process............ rodp
Something happened to the pricing of canvas a few years ago, the brand name polycottons shot up in price (they came from Karachi). Probably the biggest influence was lack of demand, trucks used miles of the stuff (literally) then virtually overnight went to curtains and sliders. That's got to affect the industry massively over here, and probably worldwide. Trucks stopped using it, sails no longer use it, garden and leisure industries no longer use it. makers go bust and the ones left bang their prices up. We use very little now, mostly use pvc, only big (ish) customer is a traditional Victorian fair and they can't use pvc (so we cheat and use poly cotton, looks the same)
sky gipsy
You could try asking who makes canvas tops for MOD vehicles nowadays, or who made a new top for the icon HUE. Under covers should be at Newbury tomorrow I'm told......they may give you the answer
TaxiDriver
UNDERCOVER COVERS every time. He used to make for and sell to Exmoor Trim when I was messing about with series LandRovers
