Blackpowder
Off interest to any owners of Army and Navy Guns are the records of this organisation held by Glasgow University. I recently contacted the Archive to learn more about my trusty A & N hammer gun purchased in 1960 from a game keeper friend for the princely sum of £15. It was my only gun for over 30 Years and has accounted for a pigeon or two in its time, its also missed considerably more which is more down to the owner than the weapon. It is a rather plain gun in 12 bore with 30 barrels and the barrel is marked,(Army and Navy CSL London K quality) the K I always understood to be "keeper". Anyway within 10 days I had the following reply. According to the Army & Navy records we hold, your gun was originally purchased by(looks like) Bennett Esq R.M.L. on 7th January 1898 for £7.0.0. It is described as a Keepers Hammer Gun, with a bore size of 12 inches, and the barrel /makers number is 53462. Obviously the archivist is not familiar with guns quoting the bore as 12 inches. This was a free service while for a fee of £40 I could have a copy of the actual entry sent by e mail. Blackpowder
guzzicat
I have had a few A & N guns over the years, I now have a double 16, they always bought in quallity goods, usually by top makers, I have a split cane fly rod that looks very Hardy,& I have seen Hardy Perfect fly reels marked A &N.They had a great history keeping English people supplied with English goods in far flung corners of the Empire Primarily India. TONY R
It is quite refreshing that they will provide the info free in this day and age, nice when you know a little history about an old gun all adds to the overall expereience i feel. Sadly in my case i have not had an army ^ navy gun for over 20 years, the only one i had was a 4 bore single one of my grandads hand me downs it went the way of far too much in a family fiscal chrisis in the early 1990s
