Big Horrible Noise

I have a MK3 Focus estate Petrol. Its only a dog and tip run car but it has a rather nasty habit of making a bad noise every time it loses traction.

Now I say a noise, it sounds like something is going to bust through the floor upfront somewhere. It sounds like a rotating crashing noise if that makes sense ?

First thought was a CV joint as it sometimes does it under hard acceleration ? What do you guys reckon ?

I also get a bit of vibration through the car when I hit 70 and wondered if it was all connected.

If it is the CV joint how to I figure out which side is shot ?

If not CV joint , anything else it could be ?

Cheers in advance

Turn on to full lock both sides and see which way makes the most noise when driving, usually (not always) it's the inside cv that's shot on the side which makes most noise. IE, if noise is worse when on full left lock then it's left hand cv.

Prop shaft,, Check for backlash, and movement..

?????? It's front wheel drive. It could be a CV joint or an engine mount. If it is a CV joint Be very careful about driving it because it could lock up solid and cause loss of control. Drive it in a tight circle at walking speed in both directions. Check to see if there is a damaged gaiter on the CV joint.

PS. Do not drive the car especially at speed (70 with a fault) ???? (Are you trying to kill yourself?) until the fault is found and sorted. If this locks up and you have a serious accident your insurance might well say that you have failed to keep the car in a roadworthy condition and leave you with the responsibility for any claim against you.

has it got traction control if so it maybe that?

I am guessing its this, they make just a clunk on grass etc, but give it big licks on tarmac you get a bit of wind up on the mounts they start rattling underneath and it can get a bit noisey. The clunk is the brakes working to keep traction.

Nephew who is not a sedate driver by any means, had this he dressed back the front subframe some how so the mount dont hit now, its quieter.

Cheers Guys, I'll get under it and see if I can see anything. I'll start with drive shafts and work from there.

Don't think its traction control, I can feel a great big thud under the car somewhere. Its more like something battering off something else sort of noise.

Strangely it doesn't do it at full lock, Only when I lose traction on gravel or I accelerate hard.
