Cranfield
I shot today targeting corvids attacking green wheat. The problem is that the wheat field is a block in the middle of grass, which has already had its first silage cut and there is no cover at the edge of the crop. With a very strong wind blowing I did not want to try an open field hide, but at the top of the grass field, about 150 yards from the wheat, was a sparse, gappy hedgerow and I set up in this, with 12 full bodied flocked crows out in a random pattern. This was right on the incoming birds flightline and they came over the hedge and through a few of the wider gaps. As everything came from behind it was fast shooting and in 3 hours I had shot 65, then at 12.30 it just turned off. I gave it an hour, but the birds never returned, they have so much alternative food at the moment that it was easy for them to find a quieter place. I took an old sbs 12ga Gunmark Sabel out today, a gun that I have not used for probably 2 years. When some of those birds spooked and took of in the strong wind, the 3/4 choke back barrel pulled them down, I had a few loooong shots. It comes up really well and I had a good cartridge/kill ratio, I had forgotten what a pleasure it is to use and I must give it a few more outings. marsh man
You done well getting 65 in the time you were there in those windy conditions , I was out yesterday afternoon on some ripe barley and like you say the wind was strong to begin with , then around 3 o clock it started to rain hard , this lasted for about a hour then the wind dropped , the sun came back out and it turned out quite a nice evening. Nice you gave the ole sable a airing , I use a B S A s x s all the year round , like me its getting on a bit and after firing over 25000 shells since I have had it I have only had to replace the top lever spring .
