rimfire4969
I have just had a drive around our shoot with another gun, we look after one pen the other two pens are looked after by other guns. Our pen moved over to corn about 2 weeks ago and the birds inside the pen and out have no problem with the corn. One pen we visited had four of the big top hat feeders and all of them are still half full of pellets and these are the 55 gallon drum feeders and as far as I am concerned a lazy mans feeder. What age do you move your birds from pellet to corn?
scolopax
I get a ton for every 400 poults and when that starts to run out I switch to wheat, which this year is at about 14 weeks. But keeping them on pellets as long as possible is generally considered to be a good thing, although I find that once they have switched to wheat and got a taste for it they ignore any pellets. I have also been hand feeding just a bucket of split maize into the pen every day and they go mad for it, the grass is now bare earth where i feed it as they continue scratting for it hours after it has all gone. kennett
Mine are still on pellets, at 13 weeks old and thriving. Just coming to the end of the release pellets and will start mixing a little wheat in at the weekend. Not sure why you think top hats are lazy, I still have to go every day to top them up and walk birds back etc etc

Not sure why you think top hats are lazy, I still have to go every day to top them up and walk birds back etc etc The top hats I am talking about are not the small versions, these are 55 gallon drum size and can fit at a guess 8 - 10 25 kg bags in them. I call them lazy as some people believe all they have to do is fill them to the brim and only check the birds now and then. This is on my shoot and no reflection on others.
