bigfish1
Thinking of buying a side by side for game shooting if its not steel proofed could I shoot light steel through it for ducks
JohnfromUK
Be aware that (most) English s/s are 2 1/2" chambers. As far as I'm aware ALL steel loads are 2 3/4" (or longer). - So no go in most English guns. For a 2 3/4 chambered gun (e.g. a few English and most Spanish, Continental and American), I believe that standard (NOT the high velocity types) are OK (in theory) in guns choked less than half choke. I have heard tales of damage though and don't really like the idea of ruining a gun I am fond of. Personally, for the very few times I shoot at duck, I have 2/3/4" bismuth loads to go through an AyA. To date I haven't actually used these, but for the very few shots I (might take), this seemed a safer (if expensive) plan. If I was going to shoot at wildfowl more often, then I would look at a suitably steel proofed gun I think.
kyska
I shoot steel, NON HP, through non steel proofed guns. Right or wrong, don't know, it's worked out for me. As above, I do this rarely, if you need a gun for waterfowl, better off buying the tool for the job. Edited October 9, 2016 by kyska

JohnfromUK
Borrow one and try it. They don't suit everyone. I shoot s/s probably more than o/u and shoot my weekly clays with an AyA (No 1) 12 bore using light loads (Hull Comp X 21g). Does the job a treat, but they are lively guns and my o/u and semi friends find it hard to get a smooth swing and find the recoil quite noticeable even with 21g. Doesn't bother me as I've been using a s/s for over 40 years on clays! AyAs are (as far as I know) always 2 3/4 or longer chambers. Daveo26
I've used some gamebore standard steel I'm sure it's suitable for any choke and any 2 3/4" gun. It actually works too.

Not always, it depends on age as many of the older ones were 2&1/2" and particularly the light weight game guns.
