ChrisPCarter
As a final thought, I've been wondering if anyone knows whether the old fourten.org.uk website is still maintained? Certainly it's needed bringing into the modern era in terms of style / design for a number of years now, but it was still updated reasonably regularly for quite a long while. That seems to have tailed off in the last year or two. Does anyone know who owns it? Or whether they'd be interested in getting some people together to give it a facelift? We clearly have plenty of experts here and I'm sure that more than one of us must be a software engineer with a tendency to take on big projects just for fun... Just a thought. Thank you all again for your input. I'm very happy to continue this further if others have more to add. I'm a fan of 410 and have had a few of them, mainly old and cheap ones but I currently have a Mossberg 500 pump with standard and Hushpower barrels. I love shooting it in either configuration and I've been surprised how well it kills, mainly with 19g Fiocchi 3" magnums. Last time I spoke to Charles at Just Cartridges he said that Fiocchi were reducing the weight of these in future and I think he said to 18g but I could be wrong. Their site is a good way of looking up some current cartridges and specs too. http://www.justcartridges.com/cartridge-search/?g=410&l=&b=&x=63&y=8 I'm keeping the Mossberg but I'm looking for a nice O/U or SxS 410 at the moment and can't decide which to go for, though I suspect my mind will be made up by whichever the nicest gun is that comes along for my budget. I shoot O/U better but I quite fancy another SxS to go with my 12 bore AYA. I've read the fourten.org.uk site articles many a time and have had the same thoughts as you about it being very out of date. I am in the IT business and could host the site for free and update it if we had access to the content. If there are a group of people interested in doing this, or getting a similar site off the ground with new content then I would be happy to set it up FOC. I've thought of doing a site myself but I know I wouldn't have time to add much content so it's something I'd need help with from others. That's a kind offer which I'm sure that I and everyone who might be interested in such a site would appreciate. The thing I'm very aware of in suggesting the above is that I don't want to tread on the toes of whoever it is that maintains / maintained the fourten.org.uk site - it's obviously been a labour of love and it's been valuable to lots of people. I don't want to charge in, giving the impression of "it's ****; we can do better" because it isn't and anything that others might attempt might not turn out to be even half as useful. I think though, that if anything is going to be done, it has to be a slow-burning project as you imply. I already maintain one relatively substantial website for the CFSA and I struggle to find time to maintain that as often as I'd like, so taking on another coding project as "lead engineer" is more than I can manage at this point. If others reading this are interested in helping do the coding or producing content for such a site, perhaps they could say so here and we can start with some discussions-by-email about what skills / resources we've got between us and how much time we might have. The discussions might end with a decision not to proceed, but it might be worth having the conversations at least.
Dasher
Any idea why 19g Fiocchi 3" magnums are going to be reduced to 18g? It's the one half decent .410 cartridge thats affordable in the UK, lets hope they don't wreck it!
Walker570
Yes, they have changed. I just purchased a 250 slab of 18gr. They say the same performance if not better. I will see come Saturday. I have tried a number of different shells but still come back to the Fiocchi. I am planning to load my own shortly and was planning on an 18g load. £168 for a 250 slab is getting a bit crazy.

I have 2 slabs of them in size 7.5 and 6 but will be getting some 8's next I think. They are Italian sizes anyway. The Express Magnasonic (subsonic) 17g are very quiet in a Hushpower but they only come in 5 shot which I think is a bit big and I like to keep the shot count up. I've found them as quiet as Eley Fourlong 2.5" which are the quietest I've used, they aren't marked as subsonic but I think people have tested them at around 900fps. I don't mind setting up the site and updating the software etc as I do that for a lot of clients anyway and some of it can be automated. Like you, I struggle at times to find the time to put articles on there. I manage websites for 3 fishing clubs, a gundog club and a shoot that I'm involved with already in my spare time. Sometimes articles such as news about events can be time critical and it's no good me taking 2 weeks to get it done. If others are prepared to be site "editors" adding news and articles then that would be great. I can do a bit when I have time and just maintain the technical bits of the site. Like you I have thought about asking the fourten.org.uk owner about taking it over or reproducing his content but like you say it can come across as your site is c**p if we aren't careful and you would immediately get a no! On the other hand they might be pleased to get a new site design and stay on as the editor.
ChrisPCarter
Thanks I will have a look see. Ordered ...many thanks. I went to order one late last night and they had all sold out! I also discovered that Coch-y-Bonddu Books, AbeBooks, AngleBooks are all the same people by the look of it. I've used Coch-y-Bonddu many times for fishing and shooting books. It looks like the only used copy around at the moment is the £30 you saw.

ChrisPCarter
How come your paying so much for your fiocchis? I wondered that. Even Just Cartridges who are not the cheapest by any means, are selling them at £71.00 a slab or £131.00 for 500. If any of you are near Brighouse, West Yorkshire I can recommend Aaron Wheeler Gunsmiths who are very good on price for Fiocchi's. http://www.aaronwheelergunsmith.co.uk/ Their cartridge prices seem to have gone off their site right now as they are updating them. Seems all suppliers are putting cartridges up by 10 to 20% from what I've heard? Not good.
