Best reloading manual (410)

Recommended Posts

Could someone please recommend me a decent reloading manual please?

Not really interested in reloading 12g cartridges but would really like to experiment with 410 loads. Got a little hand loader & rto tool few years back with the intention of making my own cartridges but never got round to actually getting started.

Wouldnt dream of doing so without getting down to some serious studying first so looking for some reading material first.

Cheers

I purchased one of them Lane hand loaders few years ago. They're not the best to be honest. It's an aluminium copy of the Lanes hand loader. But had some issues getting spent fibre wad cartridges to fit into the loader due to the expansion. I then bought a little 410 rto tool online, cost me less than two Bic Mac meals to give the shell a nicer crimp.

I'm just waiting to take that first step now really but reluctant to do so until I've done as much research as I can.

One member has alreadt kindly offered to email me 410 data.

I've Ballistic Products Small Bore Manual, which has lots of .410 data, but not that many for roll crimping, also the wads are tricky to find here (although some appear to be exactly the same as those available here, but with a different code) primers aren't that readily available and if anything the loads seem to be hotter.

Clay & Game do data sheets for a £1 a pop, SP3 powder is a good .410 powder that they do a data sheet for. All the components are available through their site or through other UK suppliers. All the data on their SP3 single sheet of data use a roll crimp: 5 x 50mm 3 x 65mm and 4 x 73mm recipes.

Good serviceable tested data to get you going.

Yes, initially Clay & Game. They were very helpful when I wanted loading details for non toxic in 410s. Also shop around and see if you can find a copy of 'Climbing the North Face of the 410" lots of info in there to study .... a bit mind boggling, but well worth having on your book shelf.

I am looking to reload my own fibre wad 410s as the ones commercially available do not do the job.

Thank you walker, C&G have already been in touch with a breakdown of prices & components that I need. Very helpful.

Just had a stag for that book, cheapest I could find was £30. But being a bit of a 410 geek I'm struggling not too press the 'buy it now' button'

i would try and find someone who reloads .410 and is very experienced in reloading that.

there are great recipes out there, but also there are poor recipes at best.

the experienced individual would easily prise them apart.

reloading is easy.

selecting the right load to make is hard.

It's a good book thats well worth reading. Not all of it is particularly current these days but lots of good advice, on all the aspects that need to be considered, from the basics to strategies for carefully "working up" loads etc. makes it well worth having.

Whilst it's absolutely not advisable to deviate from tested data, there's always wee issues that need solving, and that book allows the aspirant 410 reloader to judge which minor alterations are acceptable, and which are not.

An example is when loading new cases, as often the shot column is too low for a suitable roll crimp, the answer to that and many other little niggles can be found in there.
