pin
These are usually robots collecting active phone numbers for various purposes. Most people answer the phone with their name, they record it and flag it as active for selling on spam lists etc. Calls from numbers you don't recognise, or that display short codes - never call them back

Gully
When BT ran out of 01*** landline codes they started 02***. So, anything starting 01 or 02 is a UK landline. Anything 08 or 09 is premium rate and anything 07 is a mobile. 03,04,05 & 06 are for other things (data etc) or they'll appear when the others are used. I think Leicester and a few other fast growing towns/cities got 02 codes a few years ago to free up loads more numbers.
bbjunkie
Careful! Some 07 numbers are "special numbers" or "personal numbers" and have quite high charges even though they are not called premium rate. 05 is currently being used for VOIP (basically telephony over internet) numbers. pin
only 070 07 anything else is fine, mostly mobile but ultimately could be anything depending on the provider and what they do with it. For instance orange have an 0796 number which isn't a mobile Essentially its just routing config on some switches and translation within the intelligent network
