Odd ball motors

Just thought it could be interesting to see what odd ball vehicles guys have had or are using for their sport. Mine is a 1984 ex German army double cab type 25 VW (some times called a type 3) Also known as a DOKA. It wasn't quite powerful enough, so my son and I built a draw through turbo system using a Garret turbo and an SU carb. It more than doubled the power. We also put on some stiffer lowered springs and some fat alloys off my scrapped Audi A4. It came from the army with a gun rack between the front seats (to small in height for a shotgun, but cool all the same) and we added a stick grenade gearstick and a German helmet mounted on the dash with gauges fitted in. One time I even built a very basic hide in the rear bed and shot successfully off the back of it; guess the camo paint helped. So what ya got guys?

Do you have any photos? I would love to see it.

Sure. Bear with me as I'm not very "techy", I'll get my youngest son to upload some photos tomorrow. We build and modify most early VWs, though ours is the only one that goes shooting. I have a 65 Beetle as well, with a 2007cc turbo motor and close to 200 bhp and a mates beach buggy that runs zero to 60 mph in 3 seconds dead and 11.80 second quarter mile. Been doing it for over 30 years now and have lots of Split buses, Bays and now more T25s. Love the early stuff to look at, but the T25 definitely drives better and has luxuries like heating and break down far less.

That camper looks fun and practical.

It was both by the bucket load 👍 Huge spec, we imported it from South Africa, one of THE last bays VW made.

Powered by a fuel injected type 4 two litre engine

King size bed at the rear, double bed above cab & one hammock above front seats. Had a wet room/toilet + shower. Full size oven and fridge, microwave... Very well kitted out.

One of only three registered in Europe at the time, currently undergoing total restoration for a very wealthy gent to add to his collection.

Very fun thing to own 😎

Loving the Beetle, not so sure about the Elvis mobile. I have a B reg Bug; owned it for about 30 years. He's a bit of a sleeper what with his 2007cc turbo engine and around 180 bhp. Always had Beetles or Bays and even one fixed high top Splitty. Spent many holidays touring the French camp sites in a Bay camper and have had my own VW business in Essex for 26 years. We are very privileged, getting to work on what are now mobile lumps of history. One of our customers has the oldest Samba Splitty in the world and another guy has a WW2 German jeep.

1954 Samba 23 window. It was one of only 10 made for the first time that year in right hand drive and amazingly 6 of those 10 still exiist and his is the oldest of the 6 Looking back I'm not so sure we should have modified it for the customer, but it was over 15 years ago and the customer is always right (sort of. Sometimes) It has a 2.6 type 4 motor, Porsche cooling and 48mm carbs and a 5 speed Porsche gearbox, IRS suspension, one off conversion to the front axle and disc brakes all round. The body and interior are all original. Not sure if it's advertising and I'm certainly not, but if you're interested Facebook us and visit our web pages Harry Harpics,.Photos of the truck later today, which is what all of this started of as.

A lot of people don't get the VW thing and I totally understand it. When people ask why I like them, it's actually easier to list all the bad things, but in a wird way, it's these faults that give them their character. For me it's about the tuning of the engines (then they sound great) and having too much engine for the car; makes for fun driving and takes far more skill than a modern car. I do sort of blame my dear old dad for getting me into VWs, at 17 I wanted a MK1 Escort or hot Mini; he had the last say so I bought the first Beetle I saw and now 48 years later I'm running my own VW business and still wondering why
