ph5172
Bit of a random one... I would like to change my private registration from my current vehicle (Taxed, MOTd and Insured) to my new vehicle. The new vehicle is in my name and i have the logbook, it is currently SORNd and uninsured. I have a reference number for an amended insurance policy to include the new car (quoted on its original registration) that they are aware will bear my private registration The question i have is..... Do i need to declare my original car (the one with a private plate on) SORN before i swap the plates online with DVLA? If so do i then need to declare the same car SORN again when it gets its original registration back Or ...... do i swap the registrations then declare the old car (now on its original plate SORN), Re-Tax the new car (now on the private plate) - its on a different tax band - then just wait for the refund. I am most confused - PW HELP ME!!!
Davyo
DVLA website should give you the answer,I think you have to pay £80 though but I may be wrong.I think the private plate has to go in some kind of retention and you can't put the plate on the intended car till you get a letter instructing you to do so. It doesn't say anything about what to do with regard to tax - i have tried to call them but they are closed until the morning You are correct with the fee, the private plate goes on a retention but you are given a digital reference number you can use to assign it to another vehicle straight away - from what i can glean from DVLA website
Davyo
Taxing it's all on line now so I don't know what you'll do.If you put the reg number on the DVLA tax website it's supposed to bring up the car its assigned too.Might be worth your while asking a garage as trying to contact DVLA by phone will do your napper in. Red-dot
One thing you must never do is part with the donor vehicle before you have the original number back from the DVLA in the form of the V5 in your name and replacement mark on it. If you do the buyer owns the cherished number if he registers it before you have the V5 in your hand. The DVLA does not enter into ownership disputes. norfolk dumpling
£80 for transfer and easy to do is you own both vehicles. It's on DVLA website. Yes, as someone else said, don't get rid of donor vehicle until you've done transfer. You can put plate onto a retention basis but this is another £25. Careful if you are flogging second car as our main BMW dealer managed to sell my wife's old car with number plate on it even though we had paid retention fee to them. All hell let loose when wife found her plate for sale on several web site.
