neutron619
Thank you again to those that are contributing / have contributed. I agree with Stonepark that the current trend is for larger shot - that's one of the things that makes it difficult to find recent reliable information in the other direction. Mention shooting live game with #9s and many people will be horrified (I'd be sceptical on UK species that I shoot) but it does appear to be more prevalent and often more successful (i.e. humane) than people will acknowledge. I will continue my research. When the article is written and I've managed to get it proof read, I'll try to dig out this thread and put the link at the bottom. Many thanks. oldypigeonpopper
hello, i thought the trend now is to use the 70mm 28g, 7.5shot cartridges for pigeon shooting over decoys, which in some cases are £50 less per 1000 than 70mm 30/32g 6shot, most recent posts regarding the jockers, or are we talking clay pigeon shooting, Edited August 7, 2017 by oldypigeonpopper
Smokersmith
I read something today about the Hummingbird collection at the Natural History Museum being all shot by Lord Walsingham with dust shot. May be a good line of enquiry for your piece ....

Continental Shooter
If i could find regular supplies of Italian #8 i wouldn't have any qualms using them for: Pigeon over decoys Ducks on flight ponds any other quarry under a pointing dog (pheasants, patridges, rabbits, snipes etc.) or as a first barrel for a walked up shoot. #9 will be good for snipes but that as much as i can think of The principle is that smaller shot - at reasonable distance- guarantees more hits, although less power is transferred per pellets
