Poor fitting powder funnels

Recommended Posts

I've had a few. Even splurging on the 17cal Satern funnel and thus far they all proved to be bobbins to a greater or lesser degree.

Reloading 17 hornet (or 17 squirrel) is already an utter bean ache without having your precisely measured kernels dropping out all over the place when you extract the case from the funnel, or pass down the side of the case mouth because of a sloppy fit.

So...

I designed my own to fit either FL sized or neck sized cases perfectly. The case mouth sits at the very bottom of the funnel, the sides are polished smooth and made anti-static (just use an isopropyl wipe). no more dropped kernels, no more wobbly fit.

As the Mungler would say, job jobbed.

Nice work. :good:

Now let us into the secret, tell us how you did it.

Lost count of the times the powder has gone everywhere because the funnels was either stuck on or loose.

When I got the hornet I bought the MTM funnel set for the 17 cal adapter and whilst it still requires holding it does the job better than any other funnel I have tried.

How I did it? With a set of micrometers, an £800 3D modelling package and a £1k printer. VFM!!

I can now tailor a funnel to precisely suit the dimensions of an individual cartridge case. This one is designed to precisely match the contours (within 0.2mm) of the case, the funnel mouth fits the case mouth precisely, therefore there is nowhere for powder to go other than into the case.

Thinking of offering the service to wildcatters, getting a funnel to fit some of those must be a right pain. Send me the case and I'll design and print a funnel that suits.

(this isn't the reason I bought the printer by the way, I was just desperate to print a 3D benchy, Groot, Yoda, fake gun, any random Star Wars item or a fidget spinner).

Mick I saw these when you put it up on the hornet grou like you bought I Satern funnel which is great but as you say expensive. If not I would be first in the queue for these, as you say doing .17 hornet is hard enough getting the exact weight of powder anyway when you are only working across the range of 0.8 grain . I think people will be very keen on these crack on mate!

I can't get the flipping Satern to work! £18 plus p&p puts that at a £22 funnel that dumps my carefully weighed powder onto the bench. It's great if you have a long necked case like 17rem but with the hornet forget it. This is so, so much happier to use.

What length of item will the 3-D printer make?

Just needing a longer forend for a Police shotgun, and had thought about a 3-D printed part as a way around the process - even as master that I can use for mold making forends from.

Size isn't really an issue as for longer parts you print two halves and assemble. Using the printed item for a mould would be the way to go, as the strength from printed parts isn't the same as you get from solid parts. In some instances you gain strength for weight, but in most cases a moulded item exhibits greater long term strength. The best way to think of it is that printed items have a grain and, as with wood, you have to play to those strengths and weaknesses to get the best from a part or print.

Thats odd mate mine works well. Dump the powder in on the .17 case and a quick tap to get the flow going and im away but as you say they are £22 each so your one looks a much better prospect and is bespoke .17 hornet

It doesn't sit well in the neck of the funnel. The 17hh case neck is way too short and sits over to one side or t'other unless you wiggle it around until it clicks and then you have to hold the thing in for dear life. Even then, when you extract the case, more often than not a few kernels drop out. Every now and then it dumps a load if you didn't quite get the thing centralised. An utter pain and it's already fiddly enough!
