Novice
While I appreciate the current wildfowling season is still with us, but I've been giving some thought to the coming breeding season. Does anyone know whether the presence of nesting Canada geese will have an effect, negative or otherwise, on the prospects of duck nesting in the immediate vicinity? Wondering whether their presence will bully other species away, or whether they may even offer some incidental protection against predators with their aggressive behaviour? Many thanks Edited January 10, 2018 by Novice
Penelope
One for anser 2 I guess. Where I have seen Canadas and Mallard/Gadwall nesting in the same area, there appears to be no conflict. I guess like most things it depends on nesting densities and the size of the area. Where I speak of are a number of large gravel pits with numerous islands. tomaddy525
Had a pair of greylag nest on one of the flight ponds we have a couple of years back. Before then there used to be at least two pairs of mallard breed there each year - the only things that nest there now are (presumably) the same pair of greys
greenshank1
I don't know about Canada's but I have seen a male mute swan drive off and kill mallard ducklings that came to close to the nest.

I saw a Cob kill 4 half grown Canada goslings once; stamped them into the bottom of the margins of a gravel pit where it had them corralled in a corner. 7 hours ago, greenshank1 said: I don't know about Canada's but I have seen a male mute swan drive off and kill mallard ducklings that came to close to the nest. 7 hours ago, greenshank1 said: I don't know about Canada's but I have seen a male mute swan drive off and kill mallard ducklings that came to close to the nest.
