GingerCat
A few days ago JDog and I shot a small wood where birds were resting up after a hour or so of gorging on the game cover. We had hoped that some would decoy onto the rape but alas it was not too be. Those that came into the tall trees behind us were nothing but sporting though, a small bag just into double figures was made. Before going home we spied on a large field of rape, it needed a wind and today was the day for it. I quite looked forward to shooting it so imagine my disappointment this morning when I flung open my back door to find an almost wind less garden. That wasn't to last, fortunately my garden is sheltered and up in the Wolds a good 25 mph wind was blowing. The "Dog" had arrived half hour before me and spotted a good number of birds in a conifer wood some 300 yards in front .The wind was so strong that they were taking a huge arc out to land in it from their resting wood some mile or so away. One of the pleasures of shooting with JDog is that he tends to know where to set up and today was no different, we were around 250 metres up wind of that wood, a load of birds had been flighting up and down that side of the 100 acre or so field and were feeding earlier in the week, by rights we were in the money. We set up in double quick time, Jasper the furry rocket was on his very best behaviour and within the first 2 minutes I bagged a quick right to left. believing it was safe I poured a cup of coffee only to hear JDogs gun and the familiar "didn't you see it, it came right up to your hide". The action though was anything but fast and furious as we had expected, for whatever reasons only known to them the birds didn't want to play. We made double figures but it was hard work. What it was however was fun, great fun. Each and every shot was a test of ability and that, at least to me, makes it worthwhile. 7daysinaweek
What a great start a l&r out of the bat. I bet they were travelling well on that wind and i would be sure that some of them birds would have been well won by jd and yourself. Thanks for the read. atb 7diaw
JDog
Being too windy might have been the problem but I suspect that I just chose the wrong field for the conditions. Those pigeons that we did shoot were very memorable.
