Lovely place, some interesting things nearby, Colchester is a bit of a dump but castle is good, Lavenham, Dedham nice, Mersea is interesting ... loads to do

+1 for Mersea, nice for a wander round.

Kd Radcliffe is close by too, another place worth looking round haha.

Wivenhoe's ok but rammed with uni students in the evenings, so if you're looking for a quiet pint or meal it's probably not going to happen. Colchester has become a ****hole, as Mr Trump would say. Probably best to steer clear in the evenings, though day times can throw up a few historical treats. Mersea can be really nice, but the Romford Navy descend in numbers when the weather's good. Plenty of small villages dotted around with good food and beer, depends what you're looking for. As mentioned earlier a half hour drive will take you to Constable country, Lavenham, Long Melford and a host of other villages and small towns. If it's a quiet, relaxing break you're after I'd say Wivenhoe and Mersea would fit the bill, but can get overly busy at times. The Suffolk towns and villages are a bit more 'genteel', best to leave Colchester by 7pm... and avoid Clacton at all costs. ?
