I DO ALOT OF FOX SHOOTING WITH A 22.250,I HAVE A 243 ON MY TICKET BUT DONT OWN ONE AS I CAN GET A LEND OF ONE WHEN EVER I WANT,IM WANTING TO START SHOOTING RED UP IN THE HIGHLANDS AND IM THINKING OF SWAPING 243 FOR A 308 ON TICKET, BECAUSE, IM JUST WONDERING ON WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF THE 308 CALIBER, WHAT OTHER PEOPLE USE FOR RED,AND IF THERE IS A BETTER CALIBER OUT THERE. IVE VIDEOS OF KANGEROO BEING SHOT IN THE HEAD AT 1000YRDS SO IT MUST BE A CRACKIN CALIBER.

Firstly, welcome to the site BICOSDICOS

Secondly knock your caps lock off, people might think you are SHOUTING :good:

I would fill in some of your profile as well, people tend to get better responses once they have done that.

Thirdly - Red Calibre, hmmmm

Everyone will have there own answer to this one.

If I was going out to buy a dedicated one tomorrow I would probably buy a 7mm08.

But .308's get used a lot so do .270's, 30-06's and the 25-06 is gaining popularity as well.

Its not so much calibre but can you shoot straight? Any of the Deer legal calibres will do the job if you put the bullet in the right place, most won't if you don't. If you shoot alot of Foxes then try a top end 243 for both, if you are used to the rifle and can shoot it well then it will be fine for both. Cooper springs to mind but then I am biased.

Hi BICOSDICOS and welcome.

I have shoot more than my fair share of reds using a .243 and 100g bullets and always felt it was adequate for the job. A couple of years ago I added a .308 to my collection and have never looked back. I use 150g bullets which I find a good all-round weight for Roe, Fallow and Red. I experience less carcass damage with the .308, they go down faster.

Everyone will have their favourites but the .308 is mine for stalking and target shooting. The .308 is renowned for its accuracy, easy to load for and is the choice of snipers world wide for medium range targets ( up to 800 yards) for good reason.

Get one, you won’t regret it.

Well ive made my mind up 308 it is, now which rifle should it be in,ive got a tikka t3 hunter in 22.250 and am very happy with it,i like the sako 75 and new 85 but i shoot left handed{evan though im right handed}and the sako's have a cheek pad so i cant use them, thats why i went for the tikka{in right hand}.

thanks for all input and welcomes, this is a top site, with very helpfull people.

Tikka now make all their rifles in true left hand (mirror image of right hand) so a T3 light stainless would be

just the job for you. Just a point of law you should be aware of..you can only borrow a rifle if it an estate rifle and you are accompanied by a person with that rifle on his/her ticket....even if you have that calibre on your ticket. To use the rifle unaccompanied it must be on your ticket and that, of course, uses up your entitlement unless you get a variation for a second rifle of that calibre.

PS
