Kev1gun Posted Wednesday at 10:40 Report Share Posted Wednesday at 10:40 I have a 1953 Airsporter MK1 that my dad bought new in 1953 after he was demobbed from the Royal horse artillery, It puts puts out 9.5 ftlbs with the 5.6mm Eley wasps No it's not the best air rifle ever, but to an 11 year Kid who was allowed to take in out with only 5 pellets a time and told to come back with a Rabbit, it was the best air rifle in the world, It taught me fieldcraft, how to get closer for the shot, I lost count of the times I came back empty handed, but I never give up and in the end I would come back with a Brace of Rabbits and a Pigeon all shot inside of 20 yards, so it was a brilliant Rifle because it taught me so much, something you don't get from a 50 yard Sub 12 nowadays I have quite a few Air rifles, Theobens, FX, Air arms Daystate, Webley, Weirauch, but none of them mean as much as my Airsporter, Hows that for Rose tinted specs, And what is wrong with rose tinted specs anyway. I used to zero my Airsporter S at 25 yards and have much more fun getting to that distance than shooting at longer range. On leave from the Army at the time and not as familiar with drop etc I’d prefer to shoot from as close to the 25 yards mark as possible to avoid wounding. The .177 pellet at that range easily passed through the head if placed between the eye and ear side on for an instant kill. I’d occasionally get fed up taking 20 rabbits a night on warrens on sloped farm ground , the farmer told me he wanted to keep the population small to prevent the burrows spreading and making a cave in more likely should a tractor go over it when cutting silage, There’s absolutely no rabbits there now . At that time in the area some farmers were shooting 2-3000 rabbits a year and a hundred in one night using truck and lamp with a rimfire was common.
