it won't let me boot in safe mode or to a previous time.

also can't remember the key no to press at boot up if i have to scrub the hard drive.

If the XP splash screen is reached it probably won't be a keyboard error that's causing it. Most computers come with "halt on all but keyboard" as a BIOS setting. If it was set to halt then the XP splash screen wouldn't pop up.

That said you mention that at post it complained of a keyboard error? What is the exact wording of the error? (the BIOS can tell a few different conditions).

My guess is if the keyboard/port is faulty that's why you can't get into safe mode. Borrow another keyboard and try F8 again, don't just press it once though, wait until the thing has just completed POST (when it says it's starting XP) and hit F8 a few times, you will get a menu and one option will be safe mode.

Its odd, if XP starts but fails to boot (setting lastboot) then it will usually default to displaying a boot menu and pre-selecting "Safe Mode" or offering to boot the "Last known good configuration". Select the latter if on offer.

Assuming safe mode is the only option there is more to do depending on what happens after. Let it into safe mode, shut it down and just try restarting it.
